Botulinum Toxin Therapy for Vaginismus: Treatment That Restores Intimacy
Vaginismus is an involuntary spasm of the pelvic floor muscles that makes intercourse — and even a gynecological exam — painful or impossible. Botulinum toxin therapy is a recognized method for breaking the cycle of "pain → fear → spasm."
How the method works
Botulinum toxin injected into the spastic muscles temporarily reduces their excessive tone. This eliminates the painful spasm and gives a woman — often for the first time in years — the chance to experience intimacy without pain. During the drug's action (several months), the pathological reflex fades, and in most patients the effect persists after the toxin wears off.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is performed by a physician trained in both sexology and surgery. When indicated, treatment is complemented by work on the psychogenic component and pelvic floor exercises.
Who the procedure is for
- primary vaginismus — when intercourse has never been possible;
- secondary vaginismus — after a traumatic experience, childbirth, or surgery;
- pronounced dyspareunia (pain during intimacy) linked to muscle spasm;
- inability to undergo a gynecological exam due to spasm.
